Maple March Break

March 17, 2020 @ 1:30 pm 4:00 pm

A family friendly maple event perfect for celebrating March Break. Tour the site with interpreters guiding you along the way. Learn the history of this sweet springtime treat as you help to make and taste maple sugar. Arrive early, dress warmly, and be sure to wear boots! Help carry the sap using pails and a wooden yoke. Try your hand at the brace and bit drill. See the trees tapped and the sap evaporating. Our 90 minute Maple Program features: •Group programs that are geared toward children’s ages (there will be signage, so – after you enter- you just congregate at the spot for your children’s age group, and your guide will meet you there to begin the program). •An introduction to the Science of Maple (how trees produce sap; why is it collected in late winter; what is its composition; etc.) •A visit to the Homestead’s maple trees – see the trees tapped and, weather permitting, the sap will be running and visitors can taste sap •Try the pioneer era brace and bit drills; and try carrying pails of sap using the pioneer yoke and pails •Visit the open-kettle evaporator: listen to an age-old story of the discovery of this sweet liquid; see the changing from sap to syrup, and discover the importance of evaporation in maple-making.
